Well, they aren't pigs, they just happen to look like them. I don't know which one they'd be more closely related to but they do remind me a lot of rats.

Neither pigs nor peccaries are related to rats in any way. The rodent connection seems to stem from them being classified as "vermin" and common vermin are critters such as rats, though pigs and peccaries are not rodents of any kind.

A key trait of rodents is having paired upper and lower incisors and no canines. Rodents are not hooved.

    Dear friends!
Here in Brazil we have three families of animals similar but distinct

    JAVALI (scientific name: sus scrofa)
This is what you know as Hog. It is the family of pigs and blends well with the pigs home.
This is the animal we hunt, descended from European wild boar.

    CATETO (scientific name: Tayassu tajacu)
This is what you call a javelina.
The javelina has a white band as a collar around the neck.
This animal does not belong to the family of pigs

    QUEIXADA (scientific name: Tayassu peccary)
In English, his name would be something like Jawbone.
Much like the javelina but has all black fur and only the lower jaw is all white ( so it is called that).
Always walk in groups and is the most aggressive of all. Its main feature is the strong beat of teeth, making a loud rumbling sound.
This animal does not belong to the family of pigs

You can see in my avatar that says "SUS VENATOR". This Latin name means HOG HUNTER.

    Cheers

    My dear friend Outlander!
The taste of the javelina and true wild hog are very similar.
As the meet of both has little fat, the taste is similar.
It has what we call wild flavor.

    Cheers

    Andre

I do like wild pork and depending on the size you take here and how you prepare it, most of it is quite mild with a great flavor.

I am going to set up some places this next week and get ready. My cousin and Uncle will be visiting soon and I want to try to put my cousin on a hog. Not sure if he will want to give it a go with the AR-15 or the M1A.
