  • Trip to Wild River Ranch

    By: Michael VanSant

A few weeks ago we headed south to Goliad, Texas down near the coast to meet up with Dr. Chris Lucci and do some night hunting and filming at the Wild River Ranch. We had a great time while we were down there and got some awesome hunting footage.

The accommodations were great and the hunting cabin was better than a few of the houses David has lived in. Not to mention, we had a cook preparing our food for us at every meal.

We went high tech on this trip, using a thermal imager as a spotting device and our suppressed rifles were fitted with Gen 3 night vision scopes.

The first evening we were there we setup in the hunting rig to cover some of the 10,000 acres available to us for hog hunting. We spotted a large group of hogs near a pond but weren't able to stalk up very close to them before they bolted. We caught up to another group a little later and we stalked them to about 15 yards through some 5 foot grass before David and I both shot the biggest boar we could see.

The next day our camera crew got some footage for an instructional video for Dr. Lucci that demonstrates the weapons and weapon accessories provided by Wild River Ranch for their night hunts.

That evening we hit the stands before dark and David Falconer put the camera down for a little while and got a couple of hogs early. Then we loaded back up in the truck to do some more recon and David and I got in another successful stalk.

We had a great trip and got in some excellent hunting. I'd like to thank Dr. Chris Lucci, his assistant Bill and the rest of the folks at Wild River Ranch for having us down and we're looking forward to getting back down there again soon.
